Laura Plantation is said to be the place where the Br'er Rabbit stories were recorded. We familiarized our children with the stories through books and videos before our last "temple vacation," and included stops at Laura and nearby Oak Alley for a history lesson. The children enjoyed both plantations as well as driving to the top of the levee to see the Mississippi River.

Houmas House Plantation and Gardens billed as the crown jewel of Louisiana's River Road. At one time, the plantation was the largest producer of sugar in the country. According to our 7-year old, on a scale of 1-10, Houmas House is a 90. Of course not all 7-year olds are into history, but here's a link if you want to know more:

The web site has a really cool 15-minute film explaining the history of the property.
Any other tips for plantation and/or swamp tours?
